Improved Focus

Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk all state that focus is the most important quality for success. Martial arts help combat shortening attention spans by continuously instilling the practice of focus.

Grounded Confidence

The world is filled with people telling girls they 'should be confident'- but real confidence takes real work. Overcoming fears, facing challenges, and accomplishing goals are all a component of martial arts that build real confidence.

Mental Toughness/ Resilience

Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties- to stand up after being knocked down and still believe in yourself. Martial arts teach kids that it doesn't matter if you fail, fall, or look silly- what matters is that you never give up.

Discipline

Discipline is trading short term impulses for long term achievements. Martial arts help kids form the habit of self-discipline through the demand of commitment and patience.

Goal Setting & Self Improvement

One of the keys to success is the ability to define goals and the steps necessary to achieve them. Martial arts help girls learn to assess their strengths and weaknesses, set goals, and take them one step at a time.

Self Respect

Children with self respect are more likely to stand up to bullies, set boundaries, resist peer pressure, and demand respect in return. Martial arts builds self respect by teaching kids to never let anyone push them around.

Courage

It isn't about being fearless- but being brave in the face of fear and difficulty. Without courage- high grades, talent, and ambition bear no fruit. Martial arts help girls build courage by showing them that they're capable of far more than what they thought.

Assertiveness

Assertiveness is the ability to speak up for yourself in a way that is honest, calm, and direct. It means saying yes when you mean yes, and no when you mean no. Many girls struggle with being overly passive to the detriment of their self esteem. Martial arts help girls develop a backbone and a voice, and teach them that it's okay to use them.

THE LIFE CHANGING VALUE of martial arts training

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

Fitness

Martial arts set kids on a path of healthy living, getting them in the habit of regular exercise and improving their cardio and strength.

Body Image

Martial arts help girls see their body in terms of what it can do, instead of what it looks like.

Co-ordination

Martial arts help girls develop balance, body awareness, co-ordination, and flexibility.

FAQ

Can Beginners Join? Will They Catch Up?

99.9% of girls join with zero experience. Girls can jump in and pick up their learning at any point. We always switch up partners (except during COVID), often pairing more experienced girls with beginners during technique sessions to jumpstart their learning and to help them make friends. New girls are joining class all the time, so beginners are never alone!

How Long Will It Take For My Daughter To Be Good At Self Defense?

Self defense and martial arts are like anything, they take practice and repetition to be effective. The longer that a student practices the art the better prepared they will be. It takes 20 classes to learn the full self defense curriculum, which is about 6 months. We recommend that students stay in the program at least long enough to finish this. Along with their self defense techniques, it takes about six months for someone to feel like they really understand the basic concepts, movements, and techniques of any martial art. For this reason, you might consider the six month membership option.

My Daughter Is Not Very Athletic, Can She Handle It?

We get this question pretty often, and the answer is non-athletic girls will be just fine! Martial arts are not a sport that is based on athleticism like gymnastics or dance. Whether you're athletic or not, you will be able to learn the techniques like anyone else. Once you start picking up the techniques and basic movements, your coordination and confidence will improve, and you will gradually be able to do better and better!

What is Student of the Month?

We want our students to feel recognized for their hard work, and motivated to do their best every single class. Every month we award one student per class with this award which recognizes three qualities: 1. Commitment- student has shown dedication by attending every class in the month 2. Effort- student has demonstrated good effort in training, listening, asking questions, and trying her best. 3. Team work- student has shown a supportive attitude towards her fellow teammates The winner even wins their own highlight video, produced by our professional videographer! A great way to show off their skills and awesome-ness for family and friends to see!

What is The GWF Code?

Our girls sign off on the GWF Code, which lays out expectations for class behaviour. These include attire, safety, good listening, speaking assertively, taking initiative to find partners, being extra welcoming to new students, martial arts etiquette, standing tall and confidently in the gym, and more. It's amazing to see our students over time take pride in demonstrating strong qualities in class like shooting their hand up to volunteer to demonstrate or go first, or confidently walking up to new students and asking to be their partner.
